Replace Cooling Tower B2

Location: VAMC San Diego, CA
Owner: Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)

Completion: April 2009
Cost: $2,943,525.00

The contract included the installation of two temporary cooling towers, the demolishing of three existing 1,000 TON cooling towers and replacement of three new 1,200 TON high efficiency cooling towers.   Work involved replacing all tower components, piping, installing new automated control valves, and tying in with 3 new chillers.  The towers and basin were sand blasted, structurally repaired as necessary, and coated with Rhino Lining.  New DDC controls and VFD drives were provided in the upgrade.

This project was originally phased to construct one tower at a time, but to save the VA time and money, Kevcon phased the project rebuild of three towers simultaneously.  This enabled the VA (under separate contract) to install the new chillers before the summer, ahead of their planned scheduled.  This simultaneous phasing of all work required extensive weekend work and the stacking of trades.
